Sometimes my computer says it cannot detect a dial-tone.
There are a few factors to consider here:
- Your modem card may be damaged
- The phone line between your computer and the wall jack may be damaged
- If you have a surge supressor/protector in use it may have been damaged
- Phone service in your area may be down
If your modem is damaged you will most likely need to replace it. Modems can be purchased at most computer shops or stores such as Walmart, Best Buy and Circuit City.
If you suspect a damaged phone line simply replace it. If you still experience this issue there are other parts to check as well.
If there is a surge supressor/protector try removing it from the senario. Simply run a line directly from the wall jack to the computer.
There is always a chance that phone service is out in your area.
These are the most common reasons for this error, but there are other possible reasons.
